PEZ dispensers are an invention by Eduard Haas III in Vienna, Austria....believe it or not, they were not first used as a sweet treat but as an aid to stop smoking!  The word PEZ, comes form the German word for Peppermint, PfeffErminZ, taking the 3 capitalized letters to form the word "PEZ."  The first PEZ candies were sold in 1927 but the original PEZ dispensers were designed in 1949, they then made it to the United States in 1952.
